At Phoenix Park Nursery Nuthall, we’re excited to participate in British Sign Language (BSL) Week from 17th to 23rd March 2025. This annual event, organised by the British Deaf Association (BDA), commemorates the UK Government’s recognition of BSL as an official language in 2003.
Embracing Diversity Through BSL
Our nursery is committed to celebrating diversity and promoting inclusivity. BSL Week aligns perfectly with our multicultural approach, allowing us to introduce children to a new form of communication and culture.
Our BSL Week Activities
Throughout the week, we’ll incorporate BSL into our daily activities:
- Learning simple signs related to our ‘Global Story Map’ project
- Introducing BSL alphabet and basic greetings
- Hosting a special BSL storytelling session
Benefits of Early BSL Exposure
Learning BSL at a young age can:
- Enhance cultural awareness and empathy
- Improve visual-spatial skills
- Boost cognitive development
- Promote inclusivity and understanding of diverse communication needs
Involving Families
We encourage parents and carers to join us in this learning journey:
- Practice basic signs at home with your child
- Share any family experiences with sign language or Deaf culture
- Join our end-of-week BSL showcase (details to follow)
Beyond BSL Week
Our commitment to inclusive communication will continue beyond this week. We’ll incorporate BSL elements into our multicultural activities, fostering an environment where all forms of communication are valued and celebrated.
Join us in embracing the beauty of British Sign Language and opening new doors of communication for our little global citizens!
